Homemade Trail Mix

QUESTION: What is a good homemade trail mix?

ANSWER: We always say that the best homemade trail mix is the one that contains things you like and will eat!

Of course, you also need to be sure that your homemade trail mix contains ingredients that will give you a steady supply of energy if you're taking it with you on a hiking or backpacking trip.

For example, if you really like almonds, raisins, dried apricots and pecans -- you've just answered your own question. THAT combination would be your best homemade trail mix.

Really. It's that simple.

Just brainstorm a bit about the types of snacks you like and then try to make sure you have a good balance of energy-producing ingredients.

And don't forget that there are some companies who provide custom-made trail mix where you can choose your own ingredients from an online site and they will make your custom trail mix and send it to you.

I have been looking for a good recipe for trail mix!

We all eat differently so we all have different mixes

In our family we all like and need slightly different items in our trail mix. I buy everyone's favorites and then we mix our own. For example my kids need MANY more calories than I do so they get macadamia nuts and choc covered sunflower seeds. My husband LOVES peanuts so he gets lots of those. I on the other hand make sure I have almonds and lots of dried fruit like mango and cranberry. Sometimes I'll add in some choc covered espresso beans, but not when I know it's going to be hot. We have the bags all lined up on the counter, and each of us goes along and takes the handfuls of goodies we each like and make our own custom mixes. Works great!
