Backpacking Around the World

How to plan overseas adventure tours

If you're hoping to go backpacking around the world, you will have lots of planning to do in advance. However, the way you plan your overseas adventure tour depends on what type of trip you have in mind.

So, what do you need to know for a backpacking trip around the world?

First, you need to decide what level of physical exertion you can handle and whether you'll attempt long distances of trekking, hiking and backpacking. Or will you instead skip around the world on airlines and trains and just trek for shorter distances now and then?

Second, you need to decide how much time you have to dedicate to your overseas adventure trip around the world. You might want to spread out the trip over several years and just do a small portion of it each year. However, if you have a large block of time available (a year, perhaps), you can plan it all before you leave, or just plan the first parts of the trip in advance and then plan the rest of the adventure as you go.

It's time for some reading and research!

Before planning your trip you'll need to do a good bit of reading and research.

You must get a copy of one of the best resources we've found -- the Rough Guides book First-Time Around The World by Doug Lansky.

This little inexpensive book is loaded with useful information for planning your first trek around the world, and it's small enough to take with you as a ready reference. This book is an absolute essential (you'll see what we mean the moment you open it up and start reading).

Sometimes, people who are planning an around the world backpacking trip will get help by contacting travel agencies or tour guides who specialize in adventure travel.

For example, if you're going to do a trek across England as part of your adventure tour, you might want to contact Sherpa Expeditions, a group that has been handling tour bookings and baggage transport for trekking groups for over 30 years.

In fact, Sherpa Expeditions operates in many different locations around the world and can handle bookings for a simple one week trek, an inn-to-inn cycling tour, a lengthy trek across Europe, or an extreme trek into the Himalayas.

There's a lot more to an around the world adventure than just throwing some items in a pack and heading out backpacking. The world is a big place, and you need to plan carefully.

Are You a
Solo Backpacking Woman?

If you're a woman and thinking of backpacking solo, Women on the Road is a great resource, loaded with practical and useful information from someone who has "been there and done that."

Be sure to learn from the experts by reading the advice of others, and also by contacting some of the excellent tour companies who can help guide you to a successful overseas adventure tour.

See you somewhere soon, backpacking around the world?
